![]() Then that family’s mother departs, and the dad takes Saskia and his own two kids to live at Home, a cult in rural Maine. ![]() She was 11 years old when her younger brother died we don’t find out exactly what happened until the end of the book, but we do know her father went to prison for murder and her mother ran off, leaving Saskia to live with family friends. Saskia narrates the book in first-person chapters which alternate between past and present. It really ticks a lot of boxes for me, though: dual timelines! Cults! Long-buried secrets! And I really loved Miranda Beverly-Whittemore’s 2014 novel Bittersweet. I’m a little annoyed at myself for finishing this whole book despite the fact that I wasn’t enjoying it. ![]() But I think that’s the worst part of all. When we got away with it, we thought that was a good thing. “Five people planned and carried out a murder, together, and no one thought to stop it. ![]()
